Compassionate Release Granted

United States v. Atwi

When the COVID-19 pandemic began, there was very little information about this new virus except that persons with chronic health conditions were at a heightened risk of severe illness or death if they contracted COVID-19. Although our client had not yet exhausted his administrative remedies by filing a request for release with the Bureau of Prisons, we knew that court intervention was necessary for his health. The opposing argument was that there were not very many cases of COVID-19 at the prison where our client was housed, however, there were very few tests provided to incarcerated persons, so the amount of positive cases was still unknown. Judge Michelson of the Eastern District of Michigan granted our client's release. Check out the Opinion here.
