WHV Mold Class Action
By Admin Steingold 12 Sep, 2023
Women's Huron Valley ("WHV") is the only women's prison in Michigan. In 2017, over 2,000 women in the custody of the Michigan Department of Corrections ("MDOC") were housed at WHV. Because there are no other female facilities, women were forced to live in severely overcrowded conditions with outdated HVAC systems, leaky roofs and windows, and lack of proper ventilation. As a result, women suffered from numerous avoidable conditions, including symptoms consistent with mold exposure.

United States v. English
22 Jun, 2021
Our client, Jackie Davis, joined BetMGM in mid-March and spent a few days playing an online casino game, Luck O' the Roulette. Over the course of five days, Jackie won a total of over $3 million. While BetMGM allowed her to withdraw $100,000.00, the company suspended her account and refused to pay her the remaining balance - claiming a game malfunction voided the transactions. BetMGM has refused to pay Ms. Davis. See the Complaint here . In July 2022, the trial court granted Defendant's Motion to Dismiss, stating that Ms. Davis failed to show that the Michigan Gaming Control Board could not provide a remedy for this problem. A few days later, we discovered that the Board had actually resolved Ms. Davis's complaint to them, but that she was never notified of the outcome and could only receive more information through the filing of a Freedom of Information Act request. Upon receiving the Board's decision, which found that BetMGM had committed two violations, we filed a Motion for Reconsideration, showing the trial court once again that the Board cannot provide a remedy. When the trial court denied the Reconsideration, we promptly filed an appeal in the Michigan Court of Appeals. On August 2, 2023, Attorney Samantha Baker argued on behalf of Ms. Davis in the Court of Appeals. The case begins at 1:51:43 on the Michigan Court of Appeals' Youtube page .

United States v. Atwi When the COVID-19 pandemic began, there was very little information about this new virus except that persons with chronic health conditions were at a heightened risk of severe illness or death if they contracted COVID-19. Although our client had not yet exhausted his administrative remedies by filing a request for release with the Bureau of Prisons, we knew that court intervention was necessary for his health. The opposing argument was that there were not very many cases of COVID-19 at the prison where our client was housed, however, there were very few tests provided to incarcerated persons, so the amount of positive cases was still unknown. Judge Michelson of the Eastern District of Michigan granted our client's release. Check out the Opinion here.
